At CAPRIGHTS-VP, we recognise that poverty and limited economic opportunities often increase the risk of children being sent into exploitative domestic work. Addressing these underlying challenges is essential to protecting children and promoting safer, stronger families.

To support this goal, CAPRIGHTS-VP organised a five-day livelihood skills acquisition programme for more than 60 women and men in Ikotun/Igando Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos State. The training was implemented under the Protect Child Domestic Workers from Maltreatment (PCDW) project with support from the Freedom Fund and funding from the United States Department of State.

Participants received practical, hands-on training in bag making, make-up artistry, gele tying, pedicure and manicure. These marketable skills were carefully selected to enable participants to start small businesses, generate sustainable income, and improve their household livelihoods.

The initiative is part of CAPRIGHTS-VP's broader strategy to address the root causes of child domestic exploitation by strengthening the economic resilience of vulnerable families. When parents and caregivers have sustainable sources of income, they are better equipped to provide for their children without resorting to harmful coping mechanisms that expose them to exploitation.

Speaking during the training, CAPRIGHTS-VP's Programme Manager, Mrs. Ngozi Marian Arinze, reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to ensuring that every child grows up in a safe and nurturing environment. She encouraged participants to make effective use of the knowledge and skills acquired and to build sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families.

The programme also featured experienced facilitators who provided practical demonstrations and mentorship, equipping participants with the confidence to turn their new skills into viable businesses. Beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the opportunity, describing the training as life-changing and a pathway to greater financial independence.
