CAPRIGHTS-VP Engages Parents and Teachers on Child Protection at PTA Meetings in Lagos

The Centre for the Advancement and Protection of the Rights of Vulnerable People (CAPRIGHTS-VP), with support from the Freedom Fund and funding from the United States Department of State, continues to strengthen child protection systems through strategic engagement with parents and schools under A Program to Address Exploitative Child Domestic Work in Lagos.

As part of the project's prevention strategy, CAPRIGHTS-VP participated in Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meetings across selected schools in Lagos to raise awareness about exploitative child domestic work and promote the role of parents and schools in safeguarding children.

The PTA engagements provided an opportunity to sensitize parents, teachers, and school administrators on the risks, indicators, and consequences of exploitative child domestic work, while emphasizing the importance of creating safe and supportive environments for children both at home and in school.

During the sessions, CAPRIGHTS-VP facilitators discussed children's rights, positive parenting practices, effective communication with children, early identification of abuse and neglect, and the need for parents to remain attentive to changes in their children's behaviour that may indicate distress or exploitation. Participants also learned about the emotional and psychological impact of abuse on children's well-being and development.

Parents were encouraged to foster open communication with their children, provide safe spaces where children can express themselves without fear, and work closely with teachers and school counsellors to respond promptly to child protection concerns. The sessions also highlighted the critical role of schools in identifying vulnerable children, providing basic psychosocial support, and facilitating referrals where specialized intervention is required.

To strengthen access to child protection services, participants were introduced to the project's reporting and referral mechanisms for cases of child abuse, neglect, violence, and exploitative child domestic work. Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials were distributed to reinforce key safeguarding messages and encourage continued awareness within families and school communities.

The PTA meetings further strengthened collaboration between CAPRIGHTS-VP, parents, teachers, school counsellors, and school management, reinforcing a shared commitment to preventing child exploitation through community-based action and early intervention.

CAPRIGHTS-VP remains committed to working with families, schools, communities, and relevant stakeholders to strengthen protective systems that ensure every child grows up in a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment free from abuse, exploitation, and all forms of violence.
